Firewood Tower

Authors: Nikolay Polissky

Location & Date: Village of Nikola-Lenivets, Kaluga Region, 2001

Size: height 10m, 15x12m at the bottom

Material: 120 m3 of firewood

The wood pile was four-stepped, narrowing towards the top. If the tower made of hay resembled a temple, the Wood Pile looked like a strange defensive structure, the frontier post of an imaginary state — a kind of castle made of firewood.

Firewood is a main source of heat in russian village. This makes wood pile an “energy” tower. When it was dismantled, all the firewood was used in stoves of local villagers.
